Intro to Time Based Media

PROJECT 1: GIF
Statement: I recently went and saw a horror film with my girlfriend and I couldn’t stress enough how much I despise horror films. No Matter how many times I know something is going to pop up in my face with a loud noise I will always be shocked. To me what makes something scary is that you don’t know what you are going to see, or in other cases you know something terrifying is near you but you can't see it. And other times you don't even think about the terrifying things when they are in fact always watching you. That is why I created this GIF. It’s simple yet I believe it captures the daunting paranoias in our head that someone might be watching us when we aren’t even paying attention.

PROJECT 2: DREAM VIDEO

Statement: For my dream sequence video I decided to do a sort of thriller horror theme. I unfortunately had some difficulty trying to create my videos with my DSLR, so I decided to use my cell phone as an alternative. And to be honest it turned out better than I thought it would. I have always been drawn to film and movies, though when I was told to create a dream sequence film I thought this project was going to be easy. However on the contrary it turned out to be a lot more difficult despite my knowledge and love for movies. Editing video vs watching video are two very different things.

PROJECT 3: PERFORMANCE ART

Statement: For my Performance art project, I decided to take upon the subject matter of obtaining a
old skill, for this project that skill is considered doing a standing backflip. Even though I have
not practiced the skill for about 2 years, I knew that eventually I would be able to complete a flip
with a couple of trial and errors. I also considered a significant location, I choose to perform my
skill in the middle of a not so popular park surrounded by town-houses. This illustrates the idea
of feeling alone, but there is also some people walking along the outside pathways as well as
people living within the houses. This demonstrates that even though I may feel like nobody is
watching me, anyone can easily just look outside of their window and watch me if they so
desired, watching me fail until I actually complete what I was determined to do. However once I
completed my backflip I wanted to learn a new flip right on the spot, even though I knew I
wouldn’t be able to achieve it within my time frame. Thus leading to the documentation of my
struggle and frustration attempting to learn the flip, while my anonymous audience watches me.

PROJECT 4: STOP MOTION

Statement: For my Stop Motion animation project, I decided to take on a scenario when a human leaves any room, some of the inanimate objects come to life when no one's there. Almost like Disney’s “Toy Story”. Unfortunately during my editing process in Premiere Pro, the Mac crashed and deleted all of my images, so I had to redo my project last minute. Despite my circumstance I think that the project turned out well. Instead of using everyday sounds in my stop motion such as, footsteps, door knocks, etc, I decided to add an overlaying symphony soundtrack titled “Hall of the Mountain King” by Edvard Grieg. I chose this song because it brings this subtle build up of tension to the animation.
